As the official destination management organization for Calgary, Tourism Calgary’s mandate is to:
· Promote Calgary as a destination of choice, marketing the city locally, nationally, and internationally to leisure and business travelers.
· Attract and support major events and conventions.
· Steward Calgary’s destination brand.
· Lead or support development initiatives that enhance city vibrancy and the visitor experience.
· Advocate and support city building decisions that contribute to the sustainable growth of the economy while enhancing quality of life for Calgarians.
In 2023, Calgary saw an estimated 8.4 million visitors and a resulting visitor spend of $2.9 billion.
THE POSITION
Reporting to the Senior Director, Communications and Sustainability and the Senior Manager, Communications, and working collaboratively with team members, the communications Specialist will contribute to Tourism Calgary’s vision, mandate, and strategic business goals by supporting the development and execution of external and internal communications strategies.
This hands-on position will appeal to a generalist who is a strong writer, highly organized, technically savvy, creative, able to work well with a variety of stakeholders and enjoys variety and a fast-paced environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Corporate Communications
· Contributes to the execution of strategic communications plans and editorial calendars in collaboration with team members.
· Understands Tourism Calgary’s audiences / stakeholders to effectively develop and
deliver appropriate, credible, and relevant content.
· Understands Tourism Calgary’s vision, strategic direction and objectives in order to support and align tactics and outcomes.
· Collaborates with team members to develop content targeted to specific stakeholder groups.
– Supports the LinkedIn/social media content and engagement strategy in collaboration with the Marketing team and other team members.
– Provides strategic communications support for partner/member engagement activities and corporate events.
– Supports and promotes the corporate and destination brand, upholding the credibility and accountability of the organization and Calgary as a destination of choice.
– Assists in the development of corporate communications publications including e-newsletters, strategy/business planning documents, annual and quarterly reports, presentations, speeches, and other reports and materials as required.
· Supports media relations activities, both proactive and reactive.
· Supports and helps to maintain a corporate communications strategic plan and editorial calendar.
· Supports internal communication strategies and initiatives.
Tourism Strategy and Destination Development
– Supports 10-Year Tourism strategy rollout, processes and engagement, and annual business planning activities.
– Supports destination development activities as required.
– Supports Indigenous relations activities.
– Supports sustainability strategy and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
– Supports organizational research plan and data requirements of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
· A degree in communications, public relations, or related field with a minimum of three years of experience.
· Ability to develop strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and colleagues.
· Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to produce written materials for a variety of platforms, including reports, media releases, newsletters, web, editorial and presentations.
· Technically proficient and comfortable with using or learning a variety of applications, including CRM databases.
· Experience in proactive media relations.
· Must be innovative and adaptable.
· Participation in IABC or CPRS is an asset.
· Experience working in tourism, government, or membership organizations is an asset.
Working conditions
· This is a hybrid home/Calgary office position with three days in office and two days flexible.
· Candidate must have private high-speed internet, quiet place to work.
· Equipment (cell phone & laptop) provided by Tourism Calgary.
