Purpose of Role


Weir Marine Engineering is seeking a Naval Systems Specialist or Technologist with current or former experience with naval combat systems to join our Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE) Combat System Material State Validation Team in Halifax, NS. This role will support DND and Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) stakeholders with the independent verification & validation (IV&V) of the material state of various naval combat systems and related support equipment. This is a full‑time and permanent position with a requirement to regularly work in‑office and frequently onboard RCN ships with occasional flexibility for hybrid work.

Key Responsibilities



  • Lead Shipboard Surveys & Technical Investigations: Support independent verification & validation (IV&V) of the material state of various in‑service naval combat systems and new Engineering Changes (ECs) by coordinating and conducting shipboard surveys to capture deviations, defects, maintenance, regulatory, certification, and configuration issues based on technical system drawings and equipment specifications.

  • Produce Technical Assessments & Reports: Review and analyze results of onboard surveys to report individual defects within the DND System of Record with supporting specifications and evidence (including pictures gathered through surveys) and consolidate results into comprehensive reports to communicate key issues to colleagues, coastal stakeholders, and system authorities.

  • Support Technical Solutions & Changes: Collaborate with team members and coastal system subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify systemic issues across the RCN fleet, produce presentations, and lead briefings to naval system authorities to provide evidence of systemic issues and support recommended solutions.

  • Project Management & Leadership: Support task and team leads with scheduling of key activities and events, tracking priorities, monthly status reports, and completing annual reports and other task management activities (with opportunity to grow to independently lead own tasks).

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications



  • Mandatory: Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada.

  • Mandatory: Engineering technologist diploma or BSc in Engineering, or candidates with suitable military experience (prior experience supporting the Royal Canadian Navy in combat system disciplines will be prioritized).

  • 10 years of significant and recent experience in a related field involving industrial or naval maintenance inspections and reporting.

  • Ability to safely work and transit on‑board RCN ships and comfortable working aloft or from heights to conduct physical surveys and capture results using digital cameras, paper checklists, and portable tablets.

  • Proficient in reading, writing and speaking English. Bilingual in English and French is considered an asset.

  • Prior experience with the Defence Resource Management Information System (DRMIS) is considered an asset.

  • Competency with Microsoft Office 365 (incl. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook & MS Teams).

  • Resourcefulness and ability to work both within a team and independently under minimal supervision.
