The Finance team is accountable for efficient and accurate capture, reporting and reconciliation associated with environmental fee reports and payments, trades payable, incentive and grant funding claims, budgeting, financial reporting, payroll, and audit. As part of the Finance team, the Controller will report to the Director, Finance and will be responsible for hands-on involvement in day-to-day operations and supervision of staff in the accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll and audit functions. Financial Operations: Enforce and monitor financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
Monitor and ensure the accuracy of Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP) transactions, including effectively troubleshooting and resolving system issues. Maintain day-to-day and monthly functions including AR, AP, bank reconciliations and cash management. Monitor the coding of Purchase Orders and Invoices Maintain timelines for the completion of operational tasks required for month/quarter/year end.
Effectively manage cash-flow transactions and provide recommendations for movement of assets between cash, short-term and long-term investments. Payroll: Complete semi-monthly payroll functions including remittances and payroll reconciliations Work with HR to accurately track employee pay changes. Assist with employee pay inquiries as required.
Financial Reporting: Work collaboratively with the Senior Financial Reporting / Analyst on the preparation of financial and operating reports by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data including summarizing information and trends and variance analysis. Review financial reports for errors and completion. Ensure the organization is compliant and enforces all current federal, provincial, and municipal remittance and tax reporting requirements.
Prepare and coordinate annual financial audit including the generation of working papers and compilation of supporting documentation. Present data, analysis and/or financial reports to management and staff, as required. Financial Planning: Assist with the budgeting process by performing analysis and consolidating financial data with input from senior management.
Prepare budget working papers in preparation for budget approval. Leadership: Management of finance team members in the areas of AR and AP including recruitment, professional development, and performance management. Maintain files in the central and electronic system according to organization records management policy.
Act as the liaison between Alberta Recycling and external agencies and intuitions as required. Develop briefing notes, including recommendations, to support initiatives and strategic directions. Maintain effective working relationships with the management team, and all departments.
Crosstrain to support department in absence of Director of Finance. Core Competencies: Education & Experience: Completed CPA professional accounting designation, or significant progress towards achieving a CPA designation. Minimum 5 years’ experience in accounting / finance.
Experience in payroll administration is required. Payroll designation an asset, but not required. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains and Management Reporter, considered an asset.
Proficiency in using Office 365 applications, particularly Excel with strong to advanced skills. Proficiency in Power BI, considered an asset. Demonstrated management and leadership skills including the ability to supervise staff, delegate tasks and responsibilities.
Excellent time management, decision-making, problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Flexibility in adapting to changing priorities. Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Technical Capability : Knowledge of principles, practices, and functions of effective operational management and proven experience leading operational planning and reporting.
