Job Purpose: The Director of HSE is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive health and safety programs, policies, and initiatives within our organization. This role is critical in ensuring the well-being and protection of SECURE employees. The Director will lead and mentor a dedicated team of safety professionals and foster a values-driven safety culture, thereby establishing a secure and compliant work environment. You will be responsible for the development and deployment of our HSE strategies and initiatives, working in close coordination with our senior leadership team. This role plays a pivotal part in establishing and promoting a culture of HSE excellence and positioning the company as a leader in HSE. You will ensure compliance with all corporate requirements in each operational region and be a key driver in supporting our organization as an HSE leader. Reporting to the VP of ESG, this position will be based in Calgary, Alberta and provide a mix of tactical and strategic level health and safety leadership.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provide overall leadership, support, guidance, and direction of all HSE strategies and programs.
  2. Provide support and leadership in building a strong and integrated HSE functional team to support the growth of all SECURE Operations.
  3. Champion a culture of HSE excellence at all levels of the organization, emphasizing best practices and standards.
  4. Oversee the development of HSE priorities, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  5. Develop and implement strategies aligned with business objectives and consistent with SECURE HSE policies and programs.
  6. Provide reporting, trending, and analysis on HSE performance.
  7. Engagement and communication on HSE topics, such as performance, issues, opportunities, strengths metrics, etc.
  8. Preparing HSE reports and communicating key information to senior leaders.
  9. Ensure compliance with legislation affecting company operations and promote excellence through policies, programs, and best practices.
  10. Build a culture where safe behaviours are reinforced and at-risk behaviours are identified and challenged.
  11. Responsible for establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  12. Oversee investigation of incidents and near misses while ensuring proper follow-up and implementation of corrective actions.
  13. Oversee training, maintenance and support of core HS management systems and programs.
  14. Oversee the development and implementation of training programs to achieve HSE strategies and goals.

Qualifications/Competencies

The individual in this role will have:


  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  2. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or other applicable professional designation (for example, P.Eng.).
  3. 10+ years of experience in a Senior HSE role.
  4. Demonstrated leadership skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to drive change required to improve HSE performance and results.
  6. Proficiency in conducting analysis and reporting statistics.
  7. Working knowledge of safety management systems and safe work practices.
  8. Practical knowledge and experience in training and coaching staff.
  9. A broad understanding of the HSE regulatory process and principles.
  10. Strong incident investigation skills and emergency management expertise.
  11. Ability to implement techniques that improve or encourage safe behaviors and actions.
  12. Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work well under pressure.
  13. Strong ability to build working relationships and contacts within the organization and with external regulators, vendors, and contractors.
  14. Strong computer and technical writing skills.
  15. Excellent interpersonal, communication, influencing and attention to detail.
  16. Ability to travel to field location as required.
  17. Knowledge and experience in process safety management is considered an asset.

The following would be an asset in this role:

  • CRSP/CSP or other applicable professional designation is preferred.
