The Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch, situated within the Consultation, Land and Policy (CLP) Division, serves as a Centre of Excellence. It focuses on policy development, expert advice, strategic engagement, relationship building, and Metis credible assertion. SEPI enhances Alberta’s compliance with its duty to consult on land and natural resource development, supporting diverse stakeholders such as Indigenous communities, industry, municipalities, and regulators.

Are you passionate about driving strategic Indigenous engagement, relationship building and Metis credible assertion to support consultation efforts in Alberta’s land and resource development sector?. As Director of Strategic Engagement in the SEPI branch, you will lead initiatives to foster partnerships, shape policy frameworks, deliver on the Metis credible assertion process, and ensure Indigenous perspectives are integrated into government decisions. Your role is pivotal in supporting SEPI’s mission as a Centre of Excellence in Indigenous strategic engagement and policy innovation.

Key Responsibilities: Direct the Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch’s role in strategic Indigenous engagement and relationship building to support consultation on land and natural resource development. Coordinate with ministries, industry, and Indigenous communities to build partnerships and streamline engagement processes. Develop expertise in Indigenous communities, protocols, and engagement best practices.

Provide strategic advice to the Executive Director on strategic engagement direction and emerging issues. Oversee a team to deliver on the Metis Credible Assertion process. Lead the Strategic Engagement and Relations team.

Ensure alignment with ministry and government priorities through project oversight and leadership on committees. Qualifications 4 years university graduation in a field related to the position assignment, supplemented by seven years related experience. Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Senior leadership roles, leading teams in politically sensitive and diverse environments. Overseeing and delivering on complex projects, including resource management and project planning. Land management and resource development sector.

Assets for the role: Developing and implementing strategic initiatives for strategic Indigenous engagement and relationship building to support consultation in land and resource management contexts. Experience of policies, programs, and initiatives affecting Indigenous communities, and their implications for land and resource management. Experience with Indigenous rights frameworks, including treaties, land claims, and legal obligations concerning consultation and engagement.
