The Disability Management Specialist acts with considerable independence, discretion, judgment and initiative in providing advice and case management for the rehabilitation of ill/injured employees through the development, negotiation and implementation of rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation, return to work plans and workplace accommodation agreements. The Disability Management Specialist partners with and provides insight in planning, developing, promoting and evaluating the effectiveness of the disability management plans in Western Canada. The Disability Management Specialist works closely with the rest of the HR team to further the initiatives in the strategic and HR Plans.

Disability Case Management & Workplace Accommodation Support Performs case management for the rehabilitation and return to work of employees through the development, negotiation and implementation of rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation, return to work plans and duty to accommodate agreements. Monitors the effectiveness of such agreements and plans. Implements such agreements and plans to ensure both a safe and durable return to work for WCAN employees and cost effective disability management practices on behalf of Lafarge Canada Inc. Single point of contact and management representative in Western Canada for the management of sick and disability benefit claims. Provides advice to, and works with HR Managers, employees, union representatives and the benefits carriers in the development, negotiation and implementation of disability/case management plans and agreements. Ensures appropriate medically-supported workplace accommodations for employees with disabilities. Provides consultation to employees regarding available disability management services, the dispute resolution process and responsibilities in the workplace accommodation process. Establishes contact with employees who are ill or requesting medical accommodation and serves as the single point of contact for centralized communication and coordination of the accommodation/treatment/rehabilitation plan. Communicates with medical and other health care professionals to ensure accurate and timely receipt of medical information to support disability leave claims as well as planning return to work programs and/or accommodations. Coordinates the appropriate participants for the development of individual return to work plans, and ensures that process and outcome are evaluated and monitored. Identifies systemic barriers to return to work and assists departments to identify suitable transition work for ill/injured employees, and/or work that meets an employee’s accommodation needs. Represents the Lafarge Canada Inc. in WCAN and its interests in meetings with the employee, the Union and/or third party provider, and in identified cases proceeding to a third party and/or other quasi-judicial tribunal. In partnership with the Human Resources Manager, manages the substance abuse program for employees.
Program & Education Support Provides leadership in the ongoing development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of programs including the Lafarge Canada Disability Management Services Program in consultation with internal stakeholders. Remains current with workplace legislation and jurisprudence, disability guidelines and treatment protocols through research and investigation, as directed. Researches, implements, promotes, and evaluates instructional programs and training materials to assist managers, supervisors and employees in such areas as case management, return to work planning, workplace accommodation and employee attendance support programs. Educates management and employees about the Disability Management Systems Program on their roles and responsibilities which includes disability leave management, return to work and permanent/temporary accommodations. Collects and analyzes data and prepares applicable reports and proposals. Performs other related duties as required.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources and/or Diploma or Certificate in Disability Management preferred. Disability Management experience in construction or manufacturing industry an asset. Working knowledge of relevant workplace regulations, legislation and case law. Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation preferred. Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation preferred.
Experience & Skill Set: Minimum of four years’ recent related experience in medical case management, disability claims management, found in a multi-site multi-union environment OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Prior experience working in an HR Manager or HR Business Partner capacity beneficial. Ability to analyze a case or situation, problem solve and make timely recommendations. Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with conflicting expectations and resistance. Demonstrated sensitivity and effectiveness in dealing with ill or injured employees and employees with disabilities. Demonstrated ability to model professional, ethical and collaborative behaviour consistent with the position.

Salary Range: $80,.00 – $90,.00 per year
