Steel Research and Development
At EVRAZ North America, our team of researchers and scientists work together to develop and improve the quality of steel products. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our research team as a Lab Technician.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting laboratory tests on steel samples to evaluate their mechanical properties. This includes preparing and testing samples for tensile, hardness, and impact tests. The candidate will also be responsible for cutting steel pipe samples using plasma torches and interpreting weld quality based on metallographic results.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate laboratory equipment, including band saws, milling machines, and other machinery
- Prepare and perform tensile tests on heat-treated pipe, as-welded pipe, and upset tubing
- Perform hardness tests on as-welded pipe, quench and temper pipe, and as-quenched pipe
- Conduct impact tests as required
- Cut steel pipe samples using plasma torches
- Prepare and identify samples accurately and clearly for testing
- Interpret weld quality based on metallographic results and communicate results to Mill Line
- Determine parameter changes in Heat Treat based on mechanical properties and microstructures and communicate results
- Perform failure analyses and assist in interpretation of sample results
Requirements
- Academic training in metallography, metallurgy, heat treating, or non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Experience working in quality within a manufacturing operations environment
- Experience operating equipment and machinery, including band saws and milling machines
- Strong data entry skills and ability to lift 50 pounds
- Knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Petroleum Institute (API) testing requirements
