Purpose

The Finance Manager strengthens Generate Canadas finance function by providing senior-level accounting, reporting, and financial management support across the organization, with a particular emphasis on complex, multi-year programs. This role ensures that monthly close processes, financial analyses, working papers, and reporting inputs are complete, accurate, compliant, and structured for executive-level decision-making.

The role leads core operational finance functions, including payroll, payables, receivables, partner payment structures, budgeting, forecasting, multi-year revenue and expenditure tracking, and funder reporting while ensuring alignment with organizational policies, internal controls, and multi-entity financial structures.

The Manager also supports the design and implementation of upgraded financial systems and process improvements that enhance organization-wide operational excellence.


What You'll Do

Financial Operations & Management (20%)

  • Support the evaluation, selection, and implementation of financial system upgrades to enhance reporting, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Support monthly close activities including reconciliations, schedules, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Execute accurate, compliant payroll processing with oversight from the Sr. Manager, Finance & IT.
  • Support the development and maintenance of financial controls, standardized procedures, and documentation that support audit readiness and cross-organizational consistency.
  • Contribute as a senior member of the finance team and Operations Group on initiatives spanning multiple departments and entities.

Team Leadership & Supervision (15%)

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and workflow oversight to the Accounting Clerk (L2), reviewing outputs and building technical capacity in routine finance functions (AP, AR, expense processing, vendor relationships).
  • Delegate tasks, review outputs, strengthen technical skills, and build capacity in routine finance functions (AP, AR, expense processing, vendor relationships).
  • Champion continuous improvement through workflow streamlining, robust documentation, and clear internal communication.

Grant, Contract & Compliance Support (65%)

  • Develop and manage multi-year program budgets, forecasts, and financial models in collaboration with program leads and executive leadership.
  • Monitor cash flow, grant allocations, and project-level expenditures to support the financial sustainability of long-duration, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Lead monthly and quarterly program-level reporting cycles including variance analysis, scenario modeling, and re-forecasting aligned with program timelines.
  • Prepare compliant financial reports for government, philanthropic, and private funders with varying requirements.
  • Track and administer contract deliverables, milestones, financial obligations, and partner payment structures across multiple programs.
  • Ensure adherence to all funder, regulatory, and internal compliance requirements across complex, multi-year initiatives
  • Support financial audits, risk management, and the development or enhancement of internal policies and procedures.

Essential Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in financial operations, accounting, and budget management.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, manage, and improve financial processes and reporting systems.
  • Advanced spreadsheet and financial modeling skills.
  • Proven ability to support operational and executive leaders with analysis, options, and recommendations.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing organizational needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of funder reporting (government, philanthropic) and financial compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks), advanced Excel skills, and financial modeling
  • Knowledge of agriculture, climate finance, environmental markets, or carbon credit systems
  • Experience with outcome-based payment mechanisms or results-based financing
