Overview
We are seeking a motivated Associate to join our team, specializing in Child, Family and Community Service Act. This position provides an excellent opportunity for lawyers looking to transition into child protection law. No previous CFCSA experience is required, and new lawyers are encouraged to apply. The candidate will be required to bill 30 hours a week.
Responsibilities
Court Appearances: Represent clients in various stages of CFCSA proceedings, including protection hearings, case conferences, and trials.
Mediation: Participate in and facilitate mediations to help clients reach resolutions outside of court.
Family Law Act (FLA) Matters: Handle related FLA cases such as guardianship, parenting arrangements, and support orders that intersect with CFCSA.
Immigration and Refugee Matters: Assist in cases involving refugee status claims and applications for humanitarian and compassionate considerations, collaborating with clients from diverse backgrounds.
Client Consultation and Advocacy: Advise clients on their legal rights and obligations, offering compassionate support and clear guidance throughout the process.
Document Preparation: Draft pleadings, affidavits, legal correspondence, and other court-related documents.
Collaboration and Negotiation: Work closely with clients, other legal professionals, Ministry representatives, and social workers to build strong cases and negotiate favorable outcomes.
Experience
Qualified Lawyer: Must be licensed to practice law in British Columbia and in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia.
No CFCSA Experience Required: Prior experience in CFCSA matters is not necessary. We provide training and mentorship to help you excel in this field.
Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential to effectively advocate in court and collaborate with various stakeholders.
Interest in Immigration Law: An interest in exploring immigration and refugee law in addition to child protection matters.
Time Management: Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases with varying degrees of complexity.
