Manager of Configuration Management


Position Summary


This position is Hybrid Ottawa, Halifax or Victoria.


Thales is looking to hire a Manager of Configuration Management. The Manager of Configuration Management is the Head of Discipline (HoD) responsible for Configuration Management (CM) across the organization. They are also the Resource Manager for the CM team. The Manager of Configuration Management reports to the Director of Engineering.

Key Areas of Responsibility



  • As a Resource Manager you will provide appropriate resources to deliver bids, projects and products; plan the team’s workload in the short, medium and long term; develop team skills to support bids, projects and products; support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, career management and succession planning for the team; coach, mentor and develop the team; lead the team to meet company expectations for productivity, chargeability, quality, continuous improvement and accomplishment of objectives; ensure that company policies and procedures are followed, including timesheets, time off, and travel.

  • As a Head of Discipline, you will establish, standardize and evolve processes, procedures and tooling for the discipline; ensure that the discipline processes, procedures and tooling meet current and future needs of bids, projects and products; responsible for development of lessons learned and knowledge sharing across the discipline; responsible for bid, project and product estimates for the discipline.

  • As Manager of Configuration Management you are to implement and sustain the company’s CM capability; perform CM planning and management; responsible for Configuration Identification, Control, Status Accounting, Verification and Audits; responsible for managing the CM budget; manage Configuration Identification activities and the CI structure for projects and products; integrate Configuration Item technical data between the CM System and other applications including Maximo, SAP, DOORS, Omega PS, JIRA and SharePoint; manage subcontractor CM requirements and activities.

  • As a member of the CM team you will perform CM work on bids, projects and products.


Minimum Requirements



  • An engineering degree or 3-year technical program diploma in a technical field from a recognized university or college, or certified as a technologist by a recognized licensing body in a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the last 10 years managing a CM team; 5 years of CM responsibility; 5 years as a Configuration Manager for a Capital or In-Service Support contract.

  • Expertise in deploying, maintaining and using at least one CM tool; Expertise in at least one CM standard.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a people or resource manager; 5 years of experience managing a budget; 5 years of experience managing an Engineering Discipline, including responsibility for related policies and procedures.


Other Experience



  • Expertise in deployment, maintenance and use of CM tools.

  • Expertise in at least one CM standard (e.g., EIA 649, ISO 10007).

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a people or resource manager.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a budget.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing within an Engineering Discipline, including responsibility for related policies and procedures.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, IT, or a related field.

  • Management of a budget worth at least 500k CAD.

  • Experience in the Defence industry.

  • Experience in Data Management.


Special Position Requirements



  • Occasional national and international travel (about 4 times per year).

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week.


The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of base salary and variable compensation, is between 123,000 CAD and 171,000 CAD annually. This range is indicative and depends on factors including career path history, competencies, skills and performance, the company’s salary budget, program requirements, and internal equity. Thales may offer additional benefits and compensation depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s status protected by law.
