Job Description
Overview
The Mechanical Team Lead is the technical subject matter expert for the Mechanical discipline, responsible for completing R&D development and transitioning designs into manufacturing. This role ensures that concepts move beyond prototyping into reliable, standardized, and production-ready solutions. The Team Lead drives projects from the quotation and concept stage through to turnover—covering detailed design, technical documentation, fabrication and assembly drawings, reports, and oversight of manufacturing readiness. In addition to technical execution, the Mechanical Team Lead sets and enforces mechanical standards, ensures team competencies, and mentors designers and technicians. The role is pivotal in bridging innovation and manufacturability, ensuring R&D outcomes are fully realized in scalable production.
Responsibilities
- Leadership
- Provide technical direction, mentorship, and performance oversight for Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Mechanical Designers.
- Build team competencies through coaching, training, and enforcing design standards.
- Lead design and reviewing of design work, ensuring consistency, manufacturability, and alignment with RAYHAWK’s objectives.
- Champion a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement towards lean manufacturing and design.
- Develop and enforce mechanical design standards, workflows, and documentation to streamline product handoff to production.
- Mechanical Design
- Work with customers and/or internal contacts to define the scope of project requirements.
- Generate a preliminary design with sufficient detail to illustrate the proposed solution and gain approval for its execution.
- Identify components that meet requirements and create drawings with the required details for the final design for customer projects.
- Ensure that prototypes are matured into scalable, cost-effective production-ready solutions.
- Provide oversight to the design and fabrication process by coaching and mentoring Intermediate and Junior designers to prepare optimal fabrication drawings. Develop standards to ensure that the fabrication and assembly process is carried out according to specified standards and requirements.
- Work with external groups and management to create and maintain value-driven engineered products.
- Quotations & Project Management
- Work on assigned projects and advise the Supervisor and PM to ensure that changes to scope, schedule, quality and budget are managed in consultation with all stakeholders.
- Develop and implement standards for the design process to minimize unplanned changes and ensure stakeholder satisfaction.
- Assess costs, discuss with customer, finalize details of component selection.
- Follow up with customers and/or internal contacts to ensure expectations remain aligned.
- Track project measurables (e.g., quoted vs actual hours, allocated vs budgeted resources and materials, continuous improvement logs) to assess project profitability, efficiency and quality.
- Maintain current records of all designs, updates and improvements on existing designs.
- Identify opportunities to create additional value in the design and fabrication processes.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across mechanical processes and workflows.
- Lead lean scalable manufacturing strategies and practices.
- Participate in Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, and other operational excellence activities.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, standardization, and value engineering.
- Act as a key advisor to leadership on mechanical design strategy, resourcing needs, and technology adoption.
Education and Experience
- The position requires a bachelor’s degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Design, or a related discipline, supported by 10–15 years of relevant industry experience. A CAD Engineering Technology diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- Experience with industrial automation, systems integration, or product commercialization considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of DFMA principles, industrial design standards, and product lifecycle management.
- Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing technical teams.
- Proven experience transitioning R&D concepts into manufacturable products.
- Works toward developing advanced expertise on software, systems, and standards applicable to the RAYHAWK mechanical design.
