BA Blacktop Ltd. is currently seeking a team-oriented, self-motivated, and dedicated individual to join our Operation team as a Project Superintendent . The Project Superintendent is responsible for planning, scheduling, and executing construction operations. They assure projects are constructed in accordance with company safety programs, contract documents, budget, customer’s construction schedule needs, and conform to the plans and specifications.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Site Safety Standards Have a strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations. Prepare and send Notice of Project. Participate actively in Pre-Job Hazard Assessment and First Aid Assessment in collaboration with the Safety Department.
Participate in the development of Safety procedures for specific job tasks in collaboration with the Safety Department. Identify and communicate potential hazards with foremen and crews. Ensure that safety procedures in accordance with the Prime Contractor, BA OH&S manual, and Work Safe are being followed.
Ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner while considering risks and potential liabilities. Ensure all workers and subcontractors participate in project orientation prior to starting work on a specific project. Ensure work sites are always left clean and free from any hazards.
Investigate actively and in detail all incidents/accidents/near misses. Verify housekeeping, maintenance, and cleanliness of vehicles/equipment. Leadership and Supervision Review contract documents, the scope of work, drawings, and specifications prior to starting a new job site.
Review project bid documents and budget in detail with the estimator and/or project manager. Participate in job cost codes set-up. For medium to large projects, participate actively in pre-construction transition meetings.
Prepare and give all necessary information to foremen (Work Order, Drawings, Cost codes, schedule…). Schedule foreman, crew members, operators, and equipment requirements with General Superintendent or Field Operations Manager. Schedule Paving, Milling, and Concrete crews with Paving, Milling, and Concrete Superintendents as early as possible.
Update the Outlook paving schedule as required, including the type of mix, quantities, timeline, and production rates. Schedule, coordinate and negotiate with subcontractors and material suppliers. Ensure all necessary permits are obtained.
Direct and coordinate construction operations, construction methods and techniques, and overall planning of assigned projects. Prepare project schedule. Maintain 3 weekly look-ahead schedule.
Maintain regular, clear, and open communication lines with customers. Document communications through meeting minutes, emails, notes in a diary. Participate in weekly/regular job site meetings.
Review, verify and correct daily/weekly and monthly job costs in Kheops. Review cost code budgets and job budgets on a regular basis. Take corrective actions accordingly.
Be proactive and communicate results regularly with the Project Manager, Estimators, General Superintendent and/or Field Operations Manager. Ensure that Extra Works, Change Orders, and Force Account Works are discussed early with customers and documented prior to performing the work. Prepare monthly project billing in collaboration with Project Managers and/or Estimators.
Verify the accuracy of billing prior to submittal. Submit all monthly invoices prior to the 15th of the following month or earlier. Review, correct, and approve suppliers’ and subcontractors’ invoices.
Participate in the Field Operations meeting. Planning and Coordinating Communicate and discuss the schedule with foremen and sub-contractors regularly. Lead/organize/give specific instructions to the site foremen on a daily/weekly basis.
Organize what is needed for the work site, such as trucks, equipment, materials, and sub-contractors (flaggers, surveyors, utility subcontractors, etc.) in close collaboration with the site foreman. Supervise all aspects of the daily and weekly operations. Monitor work progress and ensure scheduled deadlines are met.
Quality of Work Ensure that the quality control plan is followed. Ensure that Quality Control Testing is scheduled as per the project requirements. Ensure/Verify quality requirements are met.
Address/Correct all deficiencies as early as possible. Report or ensure that all deficiencies are reported through the NCR process. Training and Development Lead, monitor, train and develop site foreman and crew members.
Ensure workers have received proper training prior to completing specific tasks (fall protection, Confined Space, Rigging, Traffic Control, …). Equipment Management Schedule equipment requirements with the Operations Manager. Verify equipment operators perform daily maintenance, fueling, greasing, fluid level checks, and overall condition checks of equipment.
Verify operators complete detailed DFERS on a daily basis/Verify vehicle drivers complete detailed Pre-trips on a daily basis. Communicate equipment issues and breakdowns with the equipment department. Reporting and Record Keeping Collect, review, and correct Daily Quantity Reports and Extra Work Orders from foremen on a daily basis.
Review foreman paperwork and papyrus timesheets on a daily basis. Integrate reports in papyrus – 48 hours window. Review and sign foremen’s daily work plans and monthly safety inspections.
Keep daily notes of work site activities, conversations, issues, and specific instructions in a diary. QUALIFICATIONS Essential Qualifications Strong and growing knowledge of road construction activities and processes. Have a strong and growing knowledge of specifications (MoTI, MMCD, municipal specifications, and TCM for Work on Roadways).
Have a good understanding of Contract Documents. Self-starting, highly motivated, and goal-orientated individual with exceptional attention to detail. Be a leader: excellent leadership and communication skills.
Strong communication skills with clients and public. Be organized, detailed, and prepared by planning ahead. Ability to maintain composure in dealing with stressful situations.
Ability to read and interpret site plans/blueprints and look up specifications from MoTI / MMCD. Ability to organize all field aspects needed on-site to begin and complete a job. Good Computer Skills including Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Project, Kheops, and Intelex.
Ability to measure and verify quantities. A desire to learn and teach; a passion to excel and to strive to get the most out of employees. Interacting daily with all departments, they are the key link between our construction operations in the field and the other divisions in the Company: The Safety Department, the Quality Department, our Estimating Team and our Accounting Team.
