Position
The Complex Care and Recovery Program is currently seeking a full-time, temporary (12 months) Registered Practical Nurse to work on a Forensic General Unit A (FGUA). As a member of an inter-professional team, you will be expected to ensure safety and security of the client care environment, and to practice in accordance with College of Nurses of Ontario professional standards, CAMH Policies and Procedures, and the CAMH Practice Model of Care. Using a primary nursing model, you will collaborate with the primary nurse to perform ongoing assessments, develop, implement and evaluate the interprofessional plan of client care for clients who may be suffering from mental illness or addiction issues and who are detained under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board (ORB).
As a member of an interprofessional team, the RPN will be responsible for working with patients from diverse backgrounds, contributing to program development; and provide education support and supervision to students. You will have sound knowledge of clinical and risk management services to adults under the jurisdiction of the ORB. You will develop, implement and monitor risk management plans and ensure compliance with the ORB disposition. As an RPN your skills include the ability to make behavioural observations, mental status and physical assessments, monitoring patient’s response to pharmaceutical and care interventions, as well as ongoing documentation and communication with other team members. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position involves some eight and 12 hour shift rotations and weekend work. This position is located at 1001 Queen Street West.
Responsibilities
- Ensure safety and security of the client care environment and practice in accordance with standards and policies.
- Collaborate with the primary nurse to perform ongoing assessments and develop, implement and evaluate the interprofessional plan of client care for patients detained under the ORB.
- Work with patients from diverse backgrounds, contribute to program development, and provide education, support and supervision to students.
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of clinical and risk management services to adults under ORB jurisdiction; develop and monitor risk management plans and ensure compliance with ORB dispositions.
- Make behavioural observations, perform mental status and physical assessments, monitor responses to interventions, and maintain ongoing documentation and communication with team members.
- Support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with regulatory and legislative requirements.
- Work eight- or twelve-hour shifts and participate in weekend rotations.
Qualifications
- Member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- A current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate is required.
- Medication administration certification or completion of an RPN education preparation program that includes medication administration.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling Nurse-Client relationships and collaboration within a diverse interprofessional team.
- Preference given to candidates with strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing, addiction issues and risk assessments; ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring management of disturbed behaviour.
- Psychiatric nursing experience with individuals with mental illness and/or addictions required.
- Understanding of forensic risk assessment plans and basic forensic legal and health systems.
- Self-directed, highly organized team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills for inter-disciplinary collaboration.
- Experience working with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Computer literacy; bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language is an asset.
