Position Summary

The Surgery Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) is empowered and responsible to act as a
highly trained RVT on the clinical floor to set an example of patient care, client care, and teamwork
at Pulse Veterinary Specialists & Emergency.


The Surgery RVT will report to the Lead Specialty RVT and work closely with Dr. Bruce to deliver high
level patient care.

This role will allow for a compressed work week with four 10-hour shifts. Overtime hours will be
required as needed for urgent surgical cases.


Duties and Responsibilities
Performs all technical responsibilities of a RVT including:
Usage and care of medical equipment, as well as sterilization techniques.
Placing IV catheters; calculating drug doses, fluid requirements and CRIs.
Monitoring anesthesia.
Use of anesthesia ventilators and multiparameter monitors.
Perform epidurals and other local anesthesia blocks.
Acquiring high quality radiographs.
Performing CPR.
Performing advanced diagnostic tests.
Assisting in surgeries.
Managing hospitalized patients, performing recovery care and additional specialized
treatments.
Assist with CT scans of surgical patients.
Help manage department schedule, including consults, rechecks and procedures.
Provides education, home care instructions, and nutritional counseling to clients.
Responsible for surgery room set-up, clean up, and quick turn over between procedures.
Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical
supplies.
Report problems or malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.
Perform quality assurance tests to ensure that the sterilization process is effective.
Perform inventory management of supplies and pharmaceuticals as required, including
ordering, receiving, storage, and handling.
Requirement to participate in surgery on-call schedule.
Supports management of client complaints as required in partnership with the Lead
Specialty RVT and Hospital Manager, interacting with clientele to deescalate, resolve,
and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion.
Maintains practice software including client and patient record management.
Follows all SOPs to support smooth hospital operations.
Follows all federal and provincial animal health laws and regulations regarding workplace
health and safety.
Openly and proactively communicates updates to DVMs, Lead Specialty RVT and other
department team members. Prioritize interdepartmental synergy by maintaining open lines
of communication with other departments.
Other duties may be assigned as required.


Qualifications

Education and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
Animal Health Technology college diploma.
Registered member of the ABVMA
Minimum of 2 years RVT experience.
Experience in the care and management of anesthetized patients.
Prior experience working within a specialty surgery department is an asset. However, full
internal training will be provided to the right candidate.

Strong time management and organizational skills including the abilities to plan,
coordinate, multitask and prioritize.
