Description

The Department of Calgary Centre for Clinical Research in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Consultant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Based at the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) at the University of Calgary, the Senior Consultant reports to the Senior Associate Dean, Clinical Research. Working directly with executive leaders of the Centre for Health Informatics (CHI), the W21C Research and Innovation Centre (W21C), the Heritage Medical Research Clinic (HMRC), and the Calgary Centre for Clinical Research (CCCR), the Senior Consultant supports strategic planning initiatives in the areas of clinical, health services, and population research.



Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Strategic Planning

  • Working with executive leaders for CHI, W21C, HMRC, and CCCR to communicate their vision and develop strategic plans, implementation plans, and large-scale funding applications that (i) align with the university and CSM’s strategic direction and priorities and (ii) reflect their unique identity in the health research and innovation space.
  • Managing and executing an integrated content strategy, and working with each Centre to develop core messaging that effectively communicates their services, expertise, value, and impact, that engages faculty and community partners, and aligns with engagement, assessment, and evaluation strategies.
  • Advising and overseeing the design, execution, and evaluation of other strategic communication deliverables that showcase the Centres’ expertise and services, promote Centre priorities, and enhance awareness and understanding of their resources, services, and capabilities.
  • Working with CHI, W21C, and CCCR leaders to strengthen their brand, support service design/re-design, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Creating and revising infographics, scientific communications, and outreach material that supports the Centres’ strategic communications (print and digital) and facilitates innovation, knowledge mobilization, and partnerships with researchers, faculty, and other key stakeholders.
  • Drafting, analyzing, and sharing results of internal and external surveys, focus groups, meetings, and other stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Collaborating with academic leaders, faculty, departments, stakeholders, and partners to gather insights and translate complex information into accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Monitoring and reporting on progress and ensuring key stakeholders are informed of current activities.
  • Facilitating meetings and managing review processes to maximize efficiency and ensure optimal outcomes.

Engagement and Analytics


  • Co-designing and leading engagement activities such as surveys, focus groups, and meetings with faculty, researchers, funding partners, and leaders with Alberta Health Services, Alberta Health, and other university partners.
  • Conducting high-level 1:1 interviews with top-level executives at the University, Cumming School of Medicine, Alberta Health Services, and Alberta Health.
  • Drafting, piloting, analyzing, and reporting the results of a comprehensive survey of internal and external stakeholders under established deadlines.


Collaboration

  • Demonstrating professionalism, discretion, courtesy, and respect in all interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Working collaboratively with other University staff, including but not limited to CSM leadership and support teams.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD or Master’s degree in a health-related discipline, social sciences, or related area of study.
  • Minimum of 10 years of postgraduate work experience, with at least 5 years in a research-related environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in effectively leading complex health research-related projects, and providing strategic guidance, direction, and solutions to stakeholders at a high level (e.g., executive leaders, senior managers, directors).
  • Experience crafting strategic plans, engagement summaries, data reports, and proceedings. Strong information design, data storytelling, survey creation, and interviewing skills.
  • Digital creative and information design skills. Able to integrate user experience and design principles into communications across various media.
  • Data and scientific literacy across multiple disciplines. Able to frame communications to demonstrate impact and value and prepare written summaries that include figures and tables, as needed for presentations and manuscripts.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information in a clear and compelling manner and tailor information to different audiences, platforms, and objectives.
  • Strong attention to detail, as the impact of error is high.
  • Effective analytical skills; adept and creative in addressing complex issues and formulating sound strategies, decisions, and solutions.
  • Must be able to work independently (self-starter) and as part of a diverse, multi-disciplinary team. Able to work collaboratively across teams and with senior leadership, build consensus, communicate effectively, and be sensitive to the needs and interests of diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven experience with engaging diverse stakeholders.
  • Quantitative research experience and knowledge regarding stages of health services research. Familiar with design thinking, observational studies, research ethics, and clinical trials.
  • Qualitative research and theming skills, including experience using qualitative analysis software preferred.
  • Exceptional project management skills, ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, anticipate needs, and to plan, organize, coordinate, and execute work accordingly. Able to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion at all times, and deal with a range of situations, which may include complex, sensitive, and confidential issues.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of Cumming School of Medicine and University of Calgary culture, environment, and operating procedures would be an asset.
  • Exceptional initiative, reliability, and commitment to providing high-quality deliverables. Able to identify and resolve challenges promptly.
  • Demonstrates a service-oriented mindset and ongoing interest in research and innovation and strives to reach high standards.
