Expected Salary Range: $123,334.00-$154,169.00-$192,710.00
Our typical hiring range will be +/- 5% of the midpoint shown above.
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel & Manager, Corporate Insurance supports BCLC’s ongoing business by providing legal advice and guidance on a broad spectrum of legal matters including risk assessment, compliance and legal drafting of contracts and negotiations. This role involves building influential relationships and working cooperatively with the business units it serves and other counsel.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Provides practical legal advice to all business units on a wide variety of matters.
Supports all levels and business units within the organization to resolve legal issues and risks as they arise.
Review, drafts and negotiate a large volume and variety of contracts, including technology contracts.
Proactively identifies and evaluates complex legal issues regarding business initiatives, particularly those with high visibility and risk, and develops and recommends practical solutions to achieve business objectives efficiently with minimum legal risk.
Supports the resolution of pending or threatened disputes between BCLC and third parties. Assesses and coordinates management of litigation and provides instruction to external counsel as required.
Develops and implements mitigation strategies to reduce impact of BCLC exposure to legal risk.
Consults and advises senior management and the Executive on highly confidential and sensitive matters.
Identifies compliance issues and works with internal stakeholders to implement solutions.
Models leadership behaviors that support the engagement of staff, and drives culture and change management initiatives.
Drafts and edits correspondence, memos, and internal/external briefing papers regarding sensitive issues with high reputational risk.
Establishes and maintains excellent communications and working relationships within BCLC to ensure that legal advice is sought by internal clients when needed and provided to external stakeholders, as required.
Supports and fosters a culture of trust, collaboration and compliance.
Mentors and trains articling students.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Law degree and a current member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia;
7 to 8 years’ experience practicing law in private practice, in-house or government in a related field, including corporate and commercial law, intellectual property law, information technology law, creditors’ remedies, administrative law or contract interpretation, drafting, and negotiation;
Experience giving practical legal advice to business through building strong knowledge of the business’ strategies and risks;
Experience with regulatory, administrative and privacy law proceedings and commercial and inter-jurisdictional agreements.
KNOWLEDGE & TECHNICAL SKILLS
Strong working knowledge of privacy law including the provisions of the FIPPA and regulations;
A proven understanding of the business priorities to be in position to address legal needs of the organization;
Thorough understanding of protecting legal privilege and maintaining strict confidentiality;
Pragmatic and business-oriented approach to find solutions to legal matters;
Exceptional people management and relationship-building skills with senior-level stakeholders both internal and external to a complex organization.

Preferred qualifications may include:
One or more risk and insurance qualifications such as the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow (FR) designations, Canadian Accredited Insurance Broader (CAIB), and/or Canadian Risk Management (CRM) would be considered an asset.
Experience with government procurement law would be considered an asset;
Experience with general litigation would be considered an asset;
Experience with gaming would be considered an asset;
Understanding of Agile methodology or experience working with a cross-functional team environment would be an asset;
Understanding of B.C. gaming industry would be an asset.
PORTFOLIO SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
When working in Corporate Insurance this role:
Responsible as the company’s in-house expert for all insurance-related matters. Provides guidance and leadership to all business units by offering technical expertise and advice on all day-to-day insurance matters as well as business development projects.
Manage all aspects of BCLC’s corporate insurance program, including review and selection of carriers, preparation of underwriting materials, negotiation of premium, provision of mid-term reports, review of policy wording and the review, audit, and analysis of insurance policies for accuracy to agreed coverage terms and conditions.
Manages BCLC’s insurance-related relationships inclusive of brokers, insurers, and underwriters.
Reviews terms and conditions of contracts, leases, and operating agreements to identify risk exposures, recommends risk mitigation steps, and revises insurance language to ensure BCLC’s interests are properly addressed.
